The Virgin Islands Humanities Council (VIHC) is a private, non-profit organization supported primarily by public funds from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH), an independent grant-making agency established by Congress in 1965 to support research, education, and public projects in the humanities. The work of the Council is accomplished by a board of thirteen volunteer directors, supported by a small staff.

	The work of the Council is based on the belief that the humanities are essential to the enrichment of life and provide the means to broaden people's understanding and judgment, regardless of their educational background or social standing.
