Gender is a fundamental aspect of personal and social identity and a biological, psychological and cultural construction of paramount importance for people everywhere. In addition, gender is often a criterion for social stratification and different political treatment as well as a favored symbol for expressing essential values and beliefs. The major in gender studies addresses such varied issues as the biology of human reproduction, roles in the family and society, the psychology of gender identity and images of men and women in literature and art.

Offers students an opportunity for focused study of such varied issues as the biology of human reproduction, roles in the family and society, the psychology of gender identity and images of men and women in literature and art. A comparative world history of both gender relations and the emergence of a feminist consciousness within the past 500 years. Case studies drawn from different regions of the world will precede the examination of the emergence of a global feminism in the late 20th and early 21st centuries. Topics will include the social roles of men and women, ideas about masculinity and femininity, understandings of orientation, forms of systematic subordination and the politics of modern feminism. |
